SOS 1:12 The King's Table and His Influence

preached by James R. Reynolds Sr. on December 6, 1978.

Song of Solomon 1:12 — While the king sitteth at his table, my spikenard sendeth forth the smell thereof.

While the king sitteth at his table, my spikenard

sendeth forth the smell thereof.

Song of Solomon 1:12

  1. The Table

At this table, the little bride finds strength. At first she was inquiring about him and searching for him. All to once, he came in view. Maybe it was just a vision or revelation at first.

Revelation 10:9

And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey.

She moves on now from just that vision or revelation so that now she is at the king’s table.

    1. A Table of Communion

Not a ‘communion table’ but ‘communion with God. The communion table is only a type, but this table is the real thing. She was looking for HIM. You are going to have to hear His voice long before you get to the table.

She is moving into an experience of close fellowship. There is a difference between knowing somebody and fellowshipping with them. In order to have fellowship you have to be close. She is drawing up to the table where he is and begins to fellowship with him and him with her.

Psalm 42:7

Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me

The communion is deep. There is a place in the Spirit that God wants to bring us into where we can really enjoy our salvation.

John 13:25

He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it?

While you are sitting at His table, there is going to be peace in your heart. At His table is joy.

    1. A Table of Revelation

The Lord’s table is not empty. There is going to be something to feed the soul.

Revelation 3:18-21

I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.

To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

This is a letter that is addressed to the Laodicean church. They have taken the reigns away from Him and He is on the outside.

What is it that will bring me to the table?

  • Listen to His Voice – Hear

Voice – not just a noise like the knock, but this word means to hear the address. He wants us to listen to the admonition already given in verse 18.

  • Open the Door -- Obey

You will find Him when you hear His voice and open the door.

“will sup with him” He will set  up a table right in your heart. He will find us eagle’s food—fresh slain meat! He will feed us hidden manna! The hidden manna is reserved for the Overcomer.

Revelation 2:17

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

He is not going to feed to us anything different than His Word, but the Word revealed.

I Corinthians 2:7-10

But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

He is going to bring some to the banqueting table and share the deep mysteries of God. Why? Because He wants us to be an Overcomer.

Revelation 3:21

To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne.

This verse follows in sequence to verse twenty. Who is going to overcome? Him that has been sitting at the banqueting table with the king feasting on the promises! It is only as we partake of His Divine nature that we become an Overcomer.

II Peter 1:4

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

“sup” greek – deipneo– the chief meal of the day

He is not going to give us a sandwich. The saints have been sandwiched to death; they have had too many sermonettes.

John 4:31

In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.

But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.

Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?

Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

He’ll give you meat to begin with; then He will give you strong meat.

  1. The King’s Table

This is no ordinary table, but is the KING’S table. How can the King come into me and have it be His table? Only by Him being king.

    1. He Must Be King of My Life

In order to sit with Him at His table, He must be King of my life.

“If He is not Lord of All, He is not Lord at all.”

There are many areas that we have not given completely to God. Do we sit at His table all the time? That shows that we are not totally committed to doing His will. We cannot hold reservations.

Matthew 26:41

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

You will never really enjoy all that He has provided for you until He is king.

    1. The Self-Life Must Go

You would have no problem, really, if it wasn’t for you. Our biggest problem is ourselves.

We must take sides against ourselves.

God is against the self-life. If we are going to sit with king at His table, then we must takes sides with Him against our self.

John 3:30

He must increase, but I must decrease.

We must refuse pity for ourselves.

  1. The King’s Influence

Song of Solomon 1:12

While the king sitteth at his table, my spikenard sendeth forth the smell thereof.

“While the king sitteth at His table” – While Jesus is king of our life!

People carry a fragrance or a spirit that will affect you. The Bride’s life is affected by the bridegroom. What He is, she is becoming.

Proverbs 27:17

Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.

Iron in Scripture is a point of view. “A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still.”

Spikenard is very costly and precious. It is usually sealed oil.

    1. The Spikenard of Humility

It is only as Jesus controls our heart, that we become what we ought to be for God. This aspect of Humility will never be until He sits on the throne of our hearts.

Which one of us is humble?

The Lord puts us through a process that we may become broken. It is only as He breaks us that we can be humble.

In the years of our experience, we can talk of people who have been broken and it destroyed them and not humbled them. The reason why it destroyed them is because He was not king. If the Lord is not resident in our life and crushing experiences come they will destroy you, but if He is resident then all that will happen is the sweet fragrance of Him will come to life.

Mark 14:3

And being in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at meat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she brake the box, and poured it on his head.

As our lives our broken and He is resident, there is going to be sweetness. When the lord is not King, then the hard times make a person hard, bitter, stubborn, or ugly. God never does anything to help us, but is working out good for us. It takes Him to be in residence so that when we are squeezed so, the fragrance of Jesus may fill the atmosphere instead of bitterness.

    1. The Spikenard of Gratitude

Song of Solomon 1:5

I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon.

Everything we have we by His grace. It is when we understand this that we can understand true worship.

John 4:23

But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

The bride is going to be filled with gratitude and real true worship. She will not need anyone to coax her to praise God. As you begin to worship God, His presence becomes stronger and the more you can worship. It is a cycle. It is not hard to worship when the Lord is present.
